An Interview with Kevin Cook, Chairperson, Adult Learn To Sail

  • 1.Why are you getting involved with ACSA and the Adult Learn To Sail program?
  • a.I believe that for a sailing enthusiast, the ACSA is the best kept secret in Ohio. Whether you are a novice, interested party or an experienced racer or cruiser with serious sea miles under your keel, there is something for everyone. Great people, dedicated, hard working members all committed to a welcoming community.
  • b.The Adult Learn To Sail program and the Youth program keep the promise of the ACSA Mission Statement to 'provide hands-on seamanship education'. The values represented in that promise are a worthy cause. I've also had some wonderful, meaningful experiences with students. The moment a beginner sailor 'gets it, their eyes light up, their grin gets wide, and they realize they are sailing are special moments. I am privileged to be part of that. Some of the stories from the students, the 'why' they bring to their participation in the program are inspiring. I should also say that being an instructor in just one session puts me on the water six times instead of doing chores, all with my wife's blessing.
  • 2.What do you feel is the greatest need for the ALTS program?
  • a.We need more instructors. To meet this need we are looking at every aspect of the program. We want to make it easy to be part of this mission-based movement.
  • 3.What do Instructors get out of the program?
  • a.A great ACSA ALTS branded instructor shirt.
  • b.Participation in the fulfillment of the promise of the ACSA Mission Statement.
  • c.Time on the water sailing.
  • d.The satisfaction and reward of impacting individuals, couples, families by helping them achieve goals and dreams.
  • e.Great stories and memories.
  • 4.What would you say to a fellow ACSA member thinking about being an instructor?
  • a.Let's talk. Reach out and let me share my experiences from the last couple of years. Let's talk about your schedule, your concerns, your boat, your experience, everything. We are open to working with our fellow team members to help remove barriers to participation. We need instructors and we can be adjustable to make it work. If you feel you do not have experience, let's talk. If talking to small groups is uncomfortable, let's talk. If you are interested at all, let's talk.
