Luau Details!!

A lot of people have asked me questions about the Luau, so I thought I'd take a moment to touch on some of the questions I've received. My apologies in advance in regards to the length of this email.

1.) Will we accept Credit Cards? This year, the club did purchase a credit card reader. I plan to have it at the sign in table and working. Please bear with us if we have difficulties as this will be the first social event that has had this option. Cash is still always an option

2.) There's a chance of rain. What is the back up plan? It's Ohio. We expect to have the weather change at a moments notice. Luckily we built a wonderful pavilion that we will be utilizing, and what would a luau be without a tropical rain shower, eh? All kidding aside, we will will have plenty of activities to keep the young ones (and young at heart) busy if we experience some rain.

3.) Can I just come for dinner? While I highly recommend watching the "kids" fly down the slip-n-slide or jump through the bounce house, yes you are welcome to come just for dinner. This is a family event and adaptability is key, especially with families. We appreciate your attendance at the luau no matter the length of time you can spend with us.

4.) Will there be a bar? Is it a cash bar? Since this is a family event with kids we were trying to stay away from serving alcoholic drinks. We have marketed the event as BYOB, and you are still encouraged to bring your own drinks. HOWEVER, with family sometimes the need for a drink is necessary. Therefore, we have decided to open up a cash bar. There will be limited beer, rum, wine for sale. We also plan to have hawaiian luau party punch (non-alcoholic) which you are welcome to bring your own alcohol to spike your punch. (Just don't spike the whole bowl - there's kids here!)

5.) What should I bring?

  • - If you plan on playing in the extreme play area, you will get wet. A bathing suit and change of clothes is highly recommended.
  • - Hawaiian shirt & Lei
  • - Squirt guns, water toys, rafts, etc. Get creative.
  • - Sunscreen, bug spray and a towel is always a great idea.
  • - Friends, family, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. This is a family event and our sailing community is a second family!

6.) Where are you showing Moana? If you plan to stick around for Moana, I highly recommend bringing your own chair/blanket to sit in/on. We would like to to show the movie on the grass hill just west of the pavilion / out Rosie's gate. You'll definitely want to be comfortable. Bug spray is a good idea. If rain rolls through, we will move the movie to the pavilion - which is even less comfortable for watching a movie and chairs/blankets would be more beneficial.

7.) What's up with the donation price? We are marketing the suggested admission as $10 for members. However, we will have a kids admission of $8. The club is still sponsoring a good chunk of the event, and this just helps us recoup some of the spending. Non-Members/Guest will be charged the admission price.

8.) What is on the menu for dinner? Drew Thompson of Seven Little Sliders food truck has graciously offered to provide a custom Hawaiian menu that I am personally really excited about. The menu includes:

  • ENTREES: (adults pick 2 | kids pick 1)
    • BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders
    • Pineapple Chicken Skewers
    • Corn & Shrimp Chowder
    • Johnsonville Sausages (kids menu)
  • SIDES: (Everyone picks 2)
    • Hawaiian Coleslaw
    • Hawaiian Rice
    • Sweet Potato Hash

9.) This isn't a question, but more so my shameless plug for volunteer support. We still have opportunities for you to volunteer. If you have time, even an hour, we really appreciate it. Volunteer opportunities are:

  • - Set Up (12p-2p)
  • - Tear Down (as the day goes on, whenever trash removal is needed)
  • - Sign In Table (1 hour shifts, 2pm-6pm)
  • - Extreme Play Area Attendant (1 hour shifts, 2pm-6pm; includes checking wristbands before someone slides or jumps, and spraying water guns at "kids" sliding)
  • - Pavilion Play Area (assist as needed; face painting, limbo, hula hooping, bubble pool, etc)

Please remember to RSVP to SocialChair@alumcreeksailing.com even up to the day of the event as we are trying to manage the expected attendance.

For up to date information follow us on the Facebook Event page.

I can't be more excited for this event and I hope everyone can make it out!
