Rear Commodore - Mike Gray

Hello Alum Creek Sailors: I made my first official tour as Rear Commodore of the docks on the morning of January 1st. (how is that for an early start?) It was cold but warm memories helped keep me warm. I am happy to report that all the docks are afloat, even the main spine at the bridge...

It’s been a long time since that has occurred. Standing on the docks on a cold morning also brought back memories of the first winter we had the docks, the year they almost floated away. As I stood on the docks looking up at the top of the pylons (those large steel poles that hold the docks in place), it is difficult to believe that during that flood I was standing on the docks looking down inside the pylons. And that the rings that hold the docks onto the pylons eventually rose above them. Had it not been for some quick engineering by the "self proclaimed ACSA Dock Engineers" like John Wargo, Jim Spurgeon, Paul Cunningham, Norm Dunwoody, Wil Jones, Frank Crawford and myself, we would have had a major catastrophe and financial disaster. Some of you may have wondered why those ugly black pieces of tubing are in the top of the pylon's. To us (ACSA Dock Engineers) they are a beautiful bit of backyard engineering which "saved" the docks from floating off the pylons and complete disaster for ACSA.

Well enough of the history lesson and on to important business. The following is a list of topics that you should be concerned with and take action on before "Splash Day".

  1. Dock invoices should have been mailed and in your possession by now.
  2. Please call me if you do not intend to renew your Dock this year.
  3. Please review the ACSA Calendar for the dates of this year’s scheduled events.
  4. Please review your Dock contract, and Dock rules.
  5. Please have your check for your dock fees to the RC by March 1st, 2008
  6. Dock pick day will be March 15th, 2008
  7. Splash day is April 1st , this is a Park rule.

Important notes about Dock pick day:
If you have a permanent dock and wish to move to one of the open docks this year you may attend dock pick day and by your seniority number pick the open dock. If you had a temporary dock last year you must attend dock pick day again this year. If you are on the wait list for a dock, you must attend Dock pick day. If you cannot be present on Dock pick day you “MUST” in writing or e-mail, provide the RC with the information to whom you want to represent you during Dock pick day. You may in writing or e-mail have the RC pick for you. If you have not made arrangements with the RC and you are not present, you will be passed over. Do not assume that because there may only be 5 open docks and you are 20th on the wait list that the pick will not get to you, be present and or have some one represent you during dock pick day.

Work parties:
We will be planning several work parties this year. Work parties are necessary for the ACSA marina and believe it or not are a lot of fun (Usually a party after the work party). They are also a great way to meet your fellow sailors and join in on the fun. We are very fortunate to be the governing body of our Marina, but this creates the need for volunteers. So, do what you can and be part of the membership that cares and makes a difference. Even if you can’t make it on the work day, you can help by dropping off some food or donate a few bucks to help provide food and drink for the workers. I will post more information on the first workday in the March newsletter.
